Before you pay for essay help, exhaust the free options. Most US universities provide significantly more support than students realize, and the quality is often very high. Here's what's worth using.
Your university's writing center
Every accredited US university has one. Most offer 30–60 minute appointments with trained writing consultants who will read your draft and give feedback on structure, argument, and citations. They won't write the paper for you, but they will identify the issues that would cost you a letter grade, which is often more valuable than a polished surface edit.
Office hours with the professor
Underused. Bring a draft, an outline, or just a question about the prompt. Most professors will give you 15 minutes of focused feedback that is calibrated exactly to what they'll grade for. This is the single most underused free resource in college.
Purdue OWL
The Online Writing Lab at Purdue is the standard reference for APA, MLA, and Chicago citation formats. Every major formatting question is answered there with examples. Save it as a bookmark.
Grammarly (free tier)
The free tier catches grammar issues and basic style problems. The premium tier upsells aren't worth it for most students, the free version handles 90% of what you need.
Your university's library research consultations
Most libraries staff research librarians who will help you find sources for a paper in a 30-minute appointment. For research-heavy assignments, this is gold, they know databases you don't and can save you hours of fruitless searching.
Peer review with a study buddy
Swap drafts with a classmate from a different major. Fresh-eye feedback catches confusion that you can't see in your own writing. Trade revision rounds across the semester and you'll both write stronger papers.
When free isn't enough
If you've used the writing center, office hours, and peer review and you're still struggling, the issue is usually time, not skill. That's where paid help has a role, not to replace the free options, but to handle the work you don't have time to do yourself while you focus on the assignments that matter most for your major.
