MBA / business school
The Harvard case study method, explained
The Harvard Case Study Method presents a real business situation from the perspective of the decision-maker, then asks the student to diagnose the problem and recommend action — with no single correct answer. It's the primary teaching method at Harvard Business School and used across most top US MBA programs. Here's how it actually works, and how MBA students prepare 3 cases a night without burning out.
The 4-part case analysis framework
Situation — one-paragraph diagnosis of what's happening in the company right now, using specifics from the case. Complication — the shift or trigger that forces a decision. Question — the strategic question the protagonist must answer (usually 1-2 sentences). Answer — your recommendation with 3 supporting reasons and one paragraph of implementation.
How to prepare a case in 60 minutes
Skim (10 min): read the first paragraph, the last paragraph, all exhibits and section headings. Deep read (25 min): active read with margin notes on Situation / Complication / Question. Quant work (15 min): calculate the 2-3 numbers that matter (contribution margin, breakeven, IRR, market share). Framework choice (5 min): pick ONE framework — Porter's 5, SWOT, 4Ps, VRIO — and outline your answer. Rehearsal (5 min): say your recommendation out loud in 90 seconds.
Cold-call preparation
Professors open class by asking one student to start the discussion. Prepare a 90-second opener that (a) names the protagonist and the decision, (b) states your recommendation clearly, and (c) previews the 3 reasons. Do NOT summarize the case — everyone read it. Take a position and defend it.
Case memo structure (2-3 pages)
Executive summary (3-5 sentences with your recommendation up top). Situation analysis (half page). Options considered (a table comparing 2-3 alternatives on 3-4 criteria). Recommendation with rationale (half page). Implementation timeline (bullet list with 30/60/90-day milestones). Financial impact (a small table).
Common mistakes MBA faculty flag
Restating the case instead of analyzing it. Presenting 4 options without picking one. Using every framework you know — pick one that fits the question. Ignoring the exhibits (the numbers are usually where the answer hides). Recommending something the case explicitly rules out.
Frequently asked questions
How many cases does an HBS student prepare per week?
12-15 cases per week during the first year — usually 3 per day, plus one study-group prep session per case.
Is participation graded on cold calls?
Yes at HBS — class participation is roughly 50% of the grade in most first-year courses. Silent students are marked down regardless of exam scores.
Where do I find Harvard cases to practice?
Harvard Business Publishing (hbsp.harvard.edu) sells individual cases at ~$9. Your school library often has a subscription.
