The 3-part structure that wins
Part 1 (200 words): one formative professional moment — a decision you made, what you learned, what changed after. Part 2 (250-350 words): the pattern this moment revealed and the career pivot it now demands. Part 3 (200-300 words): why THIS school right now — name 2-3 specific courses, professors, treks, or clubs that ONLY this program offers.
HBS-specific — "What more would you like us to know?"
HBS asks an open-ended prompt. Do not treat it as a personal essay in the undergraduate sense. Treat it as: "Show me the leader I'm admitting." Use one story, one clear lesson, and one forward-looking commitment. Length: 750-1000 words is the practical sweet spot, though the prompt has no limit.
Stanford GSB — "What matters most to you, and why?"
Stanford wants values, not accomplishments. Answer as a single value (integrity, care for others, courage) revealed through one specific story where it cost you something. Do NOT list 4 values. Length: 650 words hard cap for Essay 1.
Wharton — "How do you plan to use the Wharton MBA?"
Wharton is the most tactical of the M7 prompts. Structure: current role → gap → post-MBA goal (specific title + company/industry) → Wharton resources that close the gap (courses, professors, majors, clubs). Length: 500 words hard cap.
Closing lines that land
"I want to spend the next 40 years in operations because I've learned that supply chains are how societies keep their promises to each other. Wharton is where I learn to keep them at scale." — Specific, forward-looking, ties back to the opening story.
