How to write a hook for an essay
An essay hook is the first 1-2 sentences of your introduction — its job is to make a reader who isn't paid to read your paper want to keep reading. The five hooks that work in US college writing are: startling statistic, provocative question, vivid scene, contrarian claim, and surprising quote. Avoid the dictionary definition ("Webster defines X as…") — every US professor has read it 10,000 times.
Hook type 1 — Startling statistic
Best for: argumentative and research essays. "Forty-three percent of US college freshmen will not graduate within six years." The number does the persuading; your thesis explains why it matters.
Hook type 2 — Provocative question
Best for: persuasive and reflective essays. "What if the most expensive degree in America is also the most useless?" Works when the question genuinely cannot be answered in one word.
Hook type 3 — Vivid scene
Best for: narrative, descriptive, and personal essays. "The fluorescent light buzzed over a stack of unopened acceptance letters." One concrete image, no abstractions.
Hook type 4 — Contrarian claim
Best for: argumentative and analytical essays. "Standardized tests are the fairest part of college admissions." The opposite of what your reader expects you to say.
Hook type 5 — Surprising quote
Best for: literature and history essays. Use a quote that contradicts the figure's reputation, not one that confirms it.
Hooks to avoid
The dictionary opener ("Merriam-Webster defines education as…") The throat-clearing opener ("In today's society…"). The thesis-first opener — save the thesis for the last sentence of the intro.
