Types of essays explained
US college courses assign seven main types of essays. Each has a different purpose, structure, and grading rubric. Confusing them is the most common reason a strong draft gets a weak grade.
1. Argumentative essay
Purpose: take a debatable position and defend it with evidence. Includes a counter-argument paragraph. Common in writing, political science, philosophy, ethics. Length: 1000-2500 words typical.
2. Expository essay
Purpose: explain a topic clearly without taking a side. No counter-argument. Common in introductory courses across every discipline. Length: 750-1500 words.
3. Analytical essay
Purpose: break a text, event, or concept into parts and explain how they work. Most common essay in literature, history, and film courses. Length: 1500-3000 words.
4. Narrative essay
Purpose: tell a true story (usually first-person) that makes a larger point. Common in composition courses and college admissions essays. Length: 500-1500 words.
5. Descriptive essay
Purpose: use sensory detail to evoke a person, place, object, or experience. Less common at college level; usually a building block within other essay types.
6. Persuasive essay
Purpose: convince the reader to take a specific action or adopt a specific belief — overlaps heavily with argumentative but uses more emotional appeal. Common in marketing, communication, and rhetoric courses.
7. Compare and contrast essay
Purpose: examine two or more subjects to reveal what their similarities and differences mean. Common in literature, history, and social sciences. Length: 1000-2500 words.
