How to write an introduction paragraph
An introduction paragraph in US college writing has three parts: a hook (1-2 sentences that earn attention), a context bridge (2-4 sentences that establish the topic and stakes), and a thesis statement (1-2 sentences that state your argument and roadmap). 100-150 words total for a 1000-word essay.
Part 1 — The hook (sentences 1-2)

Part 2 — The context bridge (sentences 3-5)
Move from the hook to the topic. Define key terms only if the reader needs them. Establish why this matters now (recent event, ongoing debate, scholarly gap). Do not summarize the entire essay here — that's the thesis's job.
Part 3 — The thesis (last sentence)
A strong thesis is one to two sentences, takes a debatable position, and previews your three main reasons. Example: "Standardized tests should remain in US college admissions because they reduce subjectivity, identify high-potential students from under-resourced schools, and provide a common metric across 50 state curricula."
Common introduction mistakes
Burying the thesis in the middle of the paragraph (always put it last). Announcing the structure ("In this paper, I will discuss…") instead of stating the argument. Starting with the dictionary or with "Since the dawn of time."
